The magic of holy tower cotrubbo

Since 1800

Explore a place where history and natural beauty meet, offering a unique experience in the heart of Salento.

The Story

The Santo Cotrubbo Tower is located along the coast of Puglia, in the Gallipoli area, and is part of the system of coastal towers built to defend the territory from pirate and privateer raids, a constant threat between the 16th and 17th centuries. At that time, the Kingdom of Naples, under which Apulia fell, was particularly exposed to attacks by Saracen pirates and Ottoman fleets.

To counter this threat, it was decided to create a coastal defense network consisting of strategically placed watchtowers, often within sight of each other, so as to quickly communicate the approach of enemies through visual signals, such as fires or smoke.
